Website vs. social media page: do you need both?

If you're already posting on Instagram or Facebook and getting some engagement, it's fair to wonder whether a separate website is really necessary. Here's what each one actually does well, and where it falls short.

What a social media page does well

• Shows recent, active work — a feed feels alive in a way a static page doesn't
• Built-in discovery through followers, hashtags, and shares
• Easy, low-effort posting for photos and quick updates
• Direct messaging is already familiar to most customers

Where it falls short

• You don't own it. A platform can change its algorithm, restrict your account, or shut down access — and your entire online presence goes with it.
• It's built for browsing, not deciding. A feed shows what you posted this week; it doesn't clearly answer "what do you do, what does it cost, and how do I contact you" the way a real page can.
• It looks less established to a comparison shopper. Someone actively comparing a few options in your area will often check for a real website — its absence can read as a small but real red flag, the same way it does for a Google Maps listing alone.
• Search visibility is limited. A social profile rarely ranks well in Google search the way a real website with your business name and services can.

The honest answer

They're not competing — they do different jobs. Social media is where you show up regularly and stay visible to people who already follow you. A website is where someone lands when they're actively deciding whether to contact you. If most of your business already comes through social media referrals, that's working — a website adds the credibility and search visibility that a profile page can't provide on its own.
